In Tropical Alien’s second interview, we spoke with director Guto Parente (“My Own Private Hell” 2018, “The Cannibal Club” 2019) about his feature film “A Strange Path” (2024), a deeply personal film about the relationship between father and son, written during the pandemic as a way to process grief and reconnect with shared cinematic memories.
In the conversation, Guto reveals how the work was born from a personal need to honor his deceased father, and how cinema was always the language of affection that connected them. The director also discusses his non-linear creative process and the importance of creative partnerships with producers Ticiana Augusto Lima and Thaís Augusto.
Shot entirely in Fortaleza with funding from the Aldir Blanc Law, “A Strange Path” tells the story of David (Lucas Limeira), a young filmmaker forced to seek out his father Geraldo (Carlos Francisco) during the pandemic lockdown, after more than ten years without contact.
The director also comments on his next project, “Morte Vida Madalena,” a dramatic comedy starring Noá Bonaba (who plays the police officer in “A Strange Path”), and closes the interview with two essential recommendations from Brazilian cinema: “São Bernardo” by Leon Hirszman and “Twenty Years Later” by Eduardo Coutinho.
The complete interview is available on Tropical Alien’s YouTube channel, offering a detailed conversation about the creative process and behind-the-scenes of the film.
