In the first video of Tropical Takes, Tropical Alien’s video review series, Bruno Weber discusses “The Blue Trail” (2024), the new film by Pernambuco director Gabriel Mascaro.
In this soft science fiction, Mascaro constructs a Brazilian dystopia where the government creates a compulsory system that sends elderly people to distant colonies. The film follows Teresa (Denise Weinberg), a 77-year-old woman who, upon learning she has three weeks before being sent to one of these colonies, embarks on a journey through the Amazon rivers to fulfill her last dream: traveling by plane.
Bruno Weber highlights how Mascaro, known for “Neon Bull” and “Divine Love”, creates striking visual imagery and explores universal themes such as ageism, rebellion against oppressive systems, and the value of human dignity. The review emphasizes the film’s visual language, from the mystical Sumaúma State Park to the Amazon waters, and praises the performances of Denise Weinberg, Rodrigo Santoro as the boatman, and Cuban actress Miriam Socarrás.
Weber concludes by recommending the film for theatrical viewing, emphasizing that “The Blue Trail” is a work that demands the cinema experience due to its elaborate and surreal visual language.
The complete video review is available on Tropical Alien’s YouTube channel, offering a detailed analysis of Gabriel Mascaro’s latest work, which won the Silver Bear at the Berlin International Film Festival.
