Synopsis
Nara and Tayra grew up in Guaxuma, a beach in the north east of Brazil, but as a teenager Nara had to leave this place of freedom. After an unexpected shattering event, Nara returns to Guaxuma but she doesn’t recognize the virgin paradise of her childhood anymore. Is it the beach that has changed or Nara herself?
Fragments of memories tells the story of director Nara Normande’s childhood and youth on Guaxuma beach, 10 kilometers from Maceió, where she grew up. Narrated by the director herself (who also voices the characters), the animation focuses on the friendship of two friends in the context of contact with nature and the freedom to explore it, which shaped their relationship with each other.
Also the film’s screenwriter, Nara recounts her memories with a sensitive poetry, capable of embracing outsiders in intimate moments. The transitions between scenes happen naturally, sailing through moments that define the bond between the characters.
With a gentle rhythm of speaking, Nara expands the sense of time passing in the film, choosing precisely how to give dimension to each moment recounted through the punctual use of sound and different animation techniques. In the end, there is no questioning the power of the relationship between the girls and the memory that Nara carries with her about this period of her life.
Why we recommend it
You can see the careful craftsmanship with which the animation was created, and at the same time the sensitivity of director Nara Normande in sharing memories about her friend through this film.
