THE ORPHAN | 2018

Synopsis

Jonathas has been adopted and returned due to his ‘different’ way. Inspired by true events.

The Orphan features Jonathas, played by Kauan Alvarenga (Tool, 2023). In the opening scene, with impressive effortlessness, he brings nuances to Jonathas through an enlightened, energetic, chaotic and innocent presence. He is a character with a gravitational pull capable of bringing the viewer close to him, an attraction that arises through talent and the ideal opportunity for him to be contemplated.

Jonathas experienced more in his few years of life than a child should. As a homosexual, he was almost adopted by several couples, only to return to the orphanage where he lives shortly afterwards to wait for a new opportunity.

Although this fact is made clear in the conversation between Jonathas and Leila (Clarisse Abujamra), a social worker who is employed at the orphanage, it is in the scene of Jonathas’ first dinner in a new house that he exposes this past experience. His nervousness and at the same time familiarity with the situation tell a lot about the character, a valuable concision in a 15-minute movie.

Surrounded by cold colors, Jonathas’ world is filled with his rich imagination, fed by expectations and a version of himself that the world is not ready to know.

The non-linear editing (a decision made during the process) brings a welcome rhythm, alternating between flashbacks (Jonathas’ scenes with the adoptive couple and also with his friend) and the present, in his dialog with Leila.

The short film is a portrait of waiting and the near-death of expectation, while at the same time showing the resilience of Jonathas, who doesn’t shy away from being who he is and wants to be accepted without compromise.

The film is directed and scripted by Carolina Markowicsz (Charcoal, 2022).

Why we recommend it

Kauan Alvarenga oozes charisma and personality as Jonathas, and the scenes depicting his inner world are stunning. The partnership between Kauan and director Carolina Markowicz continues in the recent film Toll (2023).
